WHY I WENT
I don’t always trust the picture painted by mainstream media. As a photographer, I wanted to get out there, observe and make up my own mind.
WHAT I EXPERIENCED
The atmosphere was charged with frustration, determination and a desire to be heard. Being there in person gives you a very different perspective from watching events unfold on a screen.
THE STUDENTS
Students were a significant part of the demonstrations, raising concerns about their future and the pressures facing their generation.
THE VAST MAJORITY WERE PEACEFUL
This was one of the most important things I took away from the day. The overwhelming majority of people I saw were there to protest peacefully and make their voice heard.
WHEN THINGS TURNED VIOLENT
There was certainly violence and vandalism, though these incidents were a small part of a much bigger demonstration. It's a real shame that the violence of a minority has overshadowed the genuine concerns and important message behind these demonstrations.
The rising cost of living, fuel prices and the future facing young people deserve to be heard — not lost in the headlines about violence and vandalism.
THE POWER OF AN IMAGE
Clashes, smoke and destruction make dramatic photography and compelling television. But they don’t necessarily show what most people were doing, or explain why they took to the streets in the first place.
PARIS THE FOLLOWING MORNING
By the following morning the clean up was underway and everyday life was returning to normal. Paris is a large city, and disruption in particular areas doesn’t mean the entire city comes to a standstill.
SHOULD YOU CANCEL YOUR TRIP?
Absolutely not! These demonstrations are often short lived, and life in Paris returns to normal remarkably quickly. Don’t let dramatic footage put you off visiting one of the worlds most extraordinary cities.
A PERSPECTIVE FOR MY AMERICAN CLIENTS
I know some visitors from the US see these images and worry about coming to Paris. But it's important to put them into perspective.
Paris is not a city-wide riot zone. Even during demonstrations, much of the city continues with everyday life.
Don't let the headlines make the decision for you!
